John preacheth: his office, life, and baptism.
Matthew 3:1 In those dayes came Iohn þe Baptist, preachyng in the wyldernesse of Iewry, Matthew 3:2 and sayeng: Repent of the life that is past, for the kingdome of heauen is at hand. Matthew 3:3 For this is he, of whom the Prophete Esaye spake, which sayeth: The voyce of a cryer in the wyldernes, prepare ye the waye of the Lorde: & make hys pathes streyght. Matthew 3:4 Thys Iohn had hys rayment of camels heer. And a gyrdell of a skynne about hys loynes. His meat was locustes and wylde hony. Matthew 3:5 Then went out to hym Ierusalem and all Iewrye, and all the regyon rounde about Iordan, Matthew 3:6 and were baptysed of hym in Iordan, confessyng their synnes.
He reprehendeth the Pharisees,
Matthew 3:7 But when he sawe many of the Pharises and Saduces come to hys baptyme, he sayd vnto them: O generacion of vypers, who hath taught you to fle from the vengeaunce to come? Matthew 3:8 Bring forth therfore the frutes that belong to repentaunce. Matthew 3:9 And be not of soch mynde that ye wolde saye wtin your selues: we haue Abraham to oure father. For I saye vnto you: that God is able to bryng to passe, that of these stones ther shall ryse vp children vnto Abraham. Matthew 3:10 Euen now is the axe also put vnto the rote of the trees: so that euery tree which bringeth not forth good frute, is hewen downe, and cast into the fyre. Matthew 3:11 I baptyse you in water vnto repentaunce: but he þt shall come after me is myghtyer then I, whose shoes I am not worthy to beare. He shall baptise you with the holy ghost and with fyre: Matthew 3:12 whose fan is in hys hand, & he wyll purge hys floore, & gather his wheat into the barne, but wyll burne the chaffe wt vnquencheable fyre.
and baptizeth Christ in Jordan.
Matthew 3:13 Then commeth Iesus from Galile to Iordan vnto Iohn to be baptysed of hym. Matthew 3:14 But Iohn forbade hym, sayinge: I haue nede to be baptised of the: and commest thou to me? Matthew 3:15 Iesus answered & said vnto him: Let it be so now. For thus it becometh vs to fulfyll all ryghteousnesse. Then he suffred hym. Matthew 3:16 And Iesus when he was baptised, came straight waye out of the water. And lo heuen was open vnto him: and he sawe þe sprete of God descendynge lyke a doue, and lyghtyng vpon hym. Matthew 3:17 And loo, there came a voyce from heauen saienge. Thys is my beloued sonne, in whom I am well pleased.
