1 Chronicles 21
David, tempted by Satan, forceth Joab to number the people.
1 Chronicles 21:1 And Satan stode vp agaynste Israel, and persuaded Dauid to nombre Israel. 1 Chronicles 21:2 And Dauid sayde to Ioab and þe rulers of the people: go ye and nombre Israel from Bersabe to Dan, and brynge it to me that I may knowe the nombre of them. 1 Chronicles 21:3 And Ioab answered: the Lord make thy people an hundred tymes so many mo as they be. But my lord king, are they not al my lordes seruauntes: why then doth my lord requyre this thing? why shoulde my Lorde be a cause of trespace to Israel? 1 Chronicles 21:4 Neuerthelater the kynges wordes preuailed agaynst Ioab. And Ioab toke his waye. And went thorow oute all Israel, and came to Ierusalem,
The number of the people being brought, David repenteth of it.
1 Chronicles 21:5 and gaue the nombre of the counte of the people vnto Dauid. And al Israel were in nombre a thousand thousande, and an hundred thousande men that drewe swerde: and Iuda was .cccc.lxx. thousand men that drewe swerde. 1 Chronicles 21:6 But the Leuites and Beniamin he counted not amonge them. For the kynges deade semed abominable to Ioab. 1 Chronicles 21:7 And the þe Lord dyspleased wt this thing, & smote Israel. 1 Chronicles 21:8 Then sayde Dauid to God: I haue synned exceadingly in doyinge thys thynge. Neuerthelesse yet do awaye the wekednesse of thy seruaunte, for I haue done aboue measure folyshly.
David, having three plagues propounded by Gad, chooseth the pestilence.
1 Chronicles 21:9 And the Lorde spake vnto Gad Dauids sear of vysions saying: 1 Chronicles 21:10 go and tel Dauid sayinge. Thus sayth the Lorde: I geue the the chose of thre thynges: chose the one of them, that I maye do vnto the. 1 Chronicles 21:11 And Gad came to Dauid and sayde vnto him. Thus sayth the Lorde. 1 Chronicles 21:12 Chose the eyther thre yeares famyshement, or thre monethes to be consumed of thine aduersaries, the swerde of thyne enemyes ouertakynge the: or else the swerde of the Lord thre dayes and pestilence in the lande, the Aungel of the Lorde destroyinge thorowe oute all the coastes of Israel. And now aduise thy self what word I shal brynge againe to hym that sent me. 1 Chronicles 21:13 And Dauid sayde to Gad: I am in an exceadynge strayte. But let me fal into the handes of the Lord, for passynge great in his mercye, and let me not falle into the handes of men.
After the death of seventy thousand, David by repentance preventeth the destruction of Jerusalem. David, by Gad's direction, purchaseth Ornan's threshingfloor: where having built an altar, God giveth a sign of his favour by fire, and stayeth the plague.
1 Chronicles 21:14 And the Lorde sent pestilence vpon all Israel, so that there were ouerthrowen of Israel .lxx. thousande men 1 Chronicles 21:15 And God sent the Aungel to Ierusalem to destroye it. And as he was about to destroye, the Lorde behelde and had compassion on the wretchednesse, and sayde to the Aungell that destroyed, it is ynoughe, nowe cease thyne hand. And the Aungel of þe Lorde stode by the thressyng floure of Ornan the Iebusite. 1 Chronicles 21:16 And Dauid lyfte vp hys eyes & saw the Aungel of the Lorde stand betwene the earth and heauen with a drawen swerde in his hande stretched oute towarde Ierusalem. Then fel Dauid & the elders of Israel clothed in sacke vpon their faces. 1 Chronicles 21:17 And Dauid said vnto God: Is it not I that commaunded to nombre the people? And I am he that haue sinned and done euyl in deade. But what haue these shepe done? let thyne hande therfore O Lorde God, be on me and on my fathers house, and not on thy people to destroye them.
1 Chronicles 21:18 And the Aungell commaunded Gad to saye to Dauid, that Dauid should go & rere vp an aulter vnto the Lorde, in the thressyng floure of Ornan the Iebusite. 1 Chronicles 21:19 And Dauid went at the saying of Gad whyche spake in the name of the Lorde. 1 Chronicles 21:20 And Ornan turned aboute and saw the Aungel, & hys foure sonnes with him & hyd them selues: for Ornan was thressynge whete. 1 Chronicles 21:21 And Dauid came to Ornan. And when Ornan loked and sawe Dauid, he went oute of the thressyng floure, & bowed himselfe to Dauid with his face to the grounde. 1 Chronicles 21:22 And Dauid sayde to Ornan: geue me the place of the thressyng flour, that I maye build an aulter therin vnto the Lorde. Let me haue it for as muche money as it is worthe, that the plage may cease from the people. 1 Chronicles 21:23 And Ornan sayde to Dauid, take it to the, and let my lord kynge do that semeth good in his eyes. Se, I geue the oxen for a burntsacryfice, & the thressynge sleades for wood, & wheate for meateofferynge. I geue it all. 1 Chronicles 21:24 But kyng Dauid said to Ornan: not so, but I wil bye it for as much moneye as it is worthe. I wyll not take that, whiche is thine, for the Lord, and offer burntofferynges wythoute coste. 1 Chronicles 21:25 And so Dauid gaue to Ornan for the place sycles of goulde .vi. hundred by wayght. 1 Chronicles 21:26 And Dauid buylt there an aulter vnto the Lorde & offered burntofferinges & peaceofferinges, & called vnto the Lorde & he hearde him from heauen in fyre vpon the aulter of burntofferyng. 1 Chronicles 21:27 And the Lorde commaunded the aungel to put vp his swerde agayne into the shethe of it.
David sacrificeth there, being restrained from Gibeon by fear of the angel.
1 Chronicles 21:28 At that tyme when Dauid sawe, that the Lorde had hearde him in the thressyng floure of Ornan the Iebusite, he vsed to offer there. 1 Chronicles 21:29 For the tabernacle of the Lorde, which Moses made in the wyldernesse, & the aulter of burntofferynge were at the ceason in the hyll at Gabaon. 1 Chronicles 21:30 And Dauid coulde not go before it to seke God, because he was afrayde of the swerde of þe Aungel of the Lorde.
