God reproveth the unjust parable of sour grapes.
Ezekiel 18:1 The worde of the Lord came vnto me, on this maner: Ezekiel 18:2 what meane by thys comen prouerbe that ye vse in the land of Israel sayinge: The fathers haue eaten soure grapes, and the childrens teth are set on edge? Ezekiel 18:3 As truly as I lyue, sayeth the Lord God, ye shall vse thys byworde nomore in Israel. Ezekiel 18:4 Beholde, all soules are myne. Lyke as the father is mine, so is the sonne myne also. The soul that synneth shal dye.
He sheweth how he dealeth with a just father:
Ezekiel 18:5 Yf a man be godly and do the thinge that is equall and ryght Ezekiel 18:6 he eateth not vpon the hilles: he lyfteth not his eyes vp to the Idols of Israel: he defyleth not his neyghboures wyfe, he medleth with no menstruous woman: Ezekiel 18:7 he greueth no body, he geueth his detter his pledge agayn he taketh none other mans good by vyolence: he parteth his mete with the hongrye: he cloteth the naked: Ezekiel 18:8 he lendeth nothinge vpon vsury: he taketh nothinge ouer: he wythdraweth his hand from doynge wronge: he handleth faythfully betwixte man & man: Ezekiel 18:9 he walked in my commaundementes, and kepeth my lawes, and perfourmeth them faithfully: This is a ryghteous man, he shal surely liue sayeth the Lord God.
with a wicked son of a just father:
Ezekiel 18:10 Yf he now get a sonne, that is a murtherer a sheder of bloude: yf he do one of these thinges Ezekiel 18:11 (though he do not all) he eateth vpon the hilles: he defyled his neyghboures wife: Ezekiel 18:12 he greueth the poore & nedy: he robbeth and spoiled: he geueth not the detter his pledge againe he lyfteth vp his eyes vnto Idols, & medleth with abhominable thinges: Ezekiel 18:13 he lendeth vpon vsury, & taketh moreouer. Shall thys man lyue? He shall not lyue. Seynge he hath done all these abhomynacions, he shall dye, hys bloude shalbe vpon him.
with a just son of a wicked father:
Ezekiel 18:14 Now yf this man get a sonne also, that seyth al his fathers synnes, whiche he hath done: and feareth, neyther doth such lyke. Ezekiel 18:15 Namely he eateth not vpon the mountaynes: he lyfteth not his eyes vp to the Idols of Israel: he defyleth not his neighboures wife: Ezekiel 18:16 he vexeth no man: he kepeth no mans pledge: he neyther spoyleth, nor robbeth anye man: he dealeth his meate with the hongrye: he clotheth the naked: Ezekiel 18:17 he oppresseth not the poore: he receyueth no vsury, nor any thinge ouer: he kepeth my lawes, and walcketh in my commaundementes: This man shall not dye in his fathers sinne, but shall lyue withoute fayle. Ezekiel 18:18 As for his father: because he oppressed and spoiled his brothers, and dyd wyckedly amonge his people: lo, he is dead in his owne sinne.
with a wicked man repenting:
Ezekiel 18:19 And yet saye ye: Wherfore then should not this sonne beare his fathers sinne? Therfore: because the sonne hath done equitie and ryght, hath kepte al my commaundementes, and done them: therfore shal he leue in dede. Ezekiel 18:20 The same soule that synneth, shall dye. The sonne shal not beare the fathers offence, neyther shall the father beare the sonnes offence. The ryghteousnes of the righteous shalbe vpon him, and the wickednes of the wycked shalbe vpon him selfe also. Ezekiel 18:21 But yf the vngodlye will turne away from all his synnes that he hath done, and kepe al my commaundementes, and do the thinge that is equall and ryght, doutles he shall lyue, and not dye. Ezekiel 18:22 As for all his synnes that he did before, they shall not be thought vpon: but in his ryghteousnes, that he hath done, he shall lyue. Ezekiel 18:23 For haue I any pleasure in the death of a synner, sayeth the Lorde God, but rather that he conuerte and lyue.
with a just man revolting.
Ezekiel 18:24 Agayne, yf the righteous turne awaye from his righteousnes, and do iniquytie, according to all the abhomynacyons, that the wycked man doth: shal he lyue? Al the ryghteousnes that he hath done, shal not be thought vpon: but in the faute that he hath offended withall and in the synne that he hath done, he shall dye.
He defendeth his justice,
Ezekiel 18:25 And yet ye say: Tush, the waye of the lord is not indifferent. Heare therfore the house of Israel: Is not my way ryght? Or, are not youre wayes rather wicked? Ezekiel 18:26 When a ryghteous man turneth away from his ryghteousnesse, and medleth with vngodlynes: he must dye therin: yea for the vnryghteousnes that he hath done, must he dye. Ezekiel 18:27 Agayne, when the wycked man turneth awaye from his wickednesse, that he hath done, & doth the thinge whiche is equall and ryght, he shall saue hys soule alyue. Ezekiel 18:28 For in so muche as he remembreth hym selfe, & turneth him from all the vngodlynes, that he had vsed, he shall lyue, and not dye. Ezekiel 18:29 And yet sayeth the house of Israell: Tush the waye of the Lorde is not equall. Are my wayes vnryght, O ye house of Israel: Are not youre wayes rather vnequal? Ezekiel 18:30 As for me I will iudge euery man, accordynge to hys wayes, O ye house of Israel, sayeth the Lord God. Wherfore be conuerted, and turne you cleane from all youre wickednesse, so shall there no sinne do you harme.
and exhorteth to repentance.
Ezekiel 18:31 Caste awaye from you all your vngodlinesse, that ye haue done: make you new hertes and a new spirit. Wherfore will ye dye, O ye house of Israel? Ezekiel 18:32 seyng, I haue no pleasure in the death of him that dyeth, sayeth the Lorde God. Turne you then, and ye shall lyue.
