Christ comforteth his disciples against tribulation by the promise of the Holy Ghost, and by his resurrection and ascension:
John 16:1 These thynges haue I sayed vnto you, because ye shoulde not be offended. John 16:2 They shall excommunicate you: ye the tyme shall come, that whosoeuer kylleth you, wil thinke that he doeth god seruice. John 16:3 And suche thinges shall they do vnto you, because they haue not knowen the father, neyther yet me. John 16:4 But these thynges haue I tolde you, that when that houre is come ye myghte remember them that I tolde you so. These thynges sayde I not vnto you at the begynnynge, because I was present with you. John 16:5 But nowe I go my waye to hym that sent me, and none of you axeth me, whyther goest thou? John 16:6 But because I haue sayde suche thinges vnto you, youre hertes are full of sorowe. John 16:7 Neuerthelesse I tell you the trueth, it is expediente for you that I go awaye. For yf I go not awaye, that comforter wil not come vnto you. But yf I departe, I wil sende hym vnto you. John 16:8 And when he is come, he wil rebuke þe world of synne, and of ryghteousnesse, and of iudgement John 16:9 Of synne, because they beleue not on me: John 16:10 of ryghteousnesse, because I go to my father, and then ye shall not se me, John 16:11 and of iudgement, because the chiefe ruler of this worlde is iudged already. John 16:12 I haue yet many thinges to say vnto you, but ye cannot beare them awaye now. John 16:13 Howe be it when he is come (I meane the spirite of truth) he wyll lead you into all truth. He shall not speake of hym self, but whatsoeuer he shal heare, that shall he speake, and he wyll shewe you thynges to come. John 16:14 He shall glorifye me, for he shall receyue of myne, and shall shewe vnto you. John 16:15 Al thynges that the father hath, are myne. Therfore sayd I vnto you, that he shal take of myne, and shewe vnto you. John 16:16 After a whyle ye shall not se me: & agayne after a whyle ye shall se me: for I go to the father. John 16:17 Then sayed some of hys disciples amonge them selues: what is this that he sayeth vnto vs: after a whyle ye shall not se me, & agayne after a whyle ye shall se me, and that I go to the father. John 16:18 They sayd therfore: what is it that he sayeth, after a whyle? we can not tell what he sayth. John 16:19 Iesus perceyued that they woulde axe him and sayde vnto them. This is it that ye enquyre of amonge your selues that I sayde after a whyle ye shall not se me, and agayne after a whyle ye shall se me. John 16:20 Verely verely I say vnto you: ye shall wepe and lament, & the world shall reioyce. Ye shall sorowe, but your sorow shalbe turned into ioye. John 16:21 A woman when she trauayleth, hathe sorowe, because her houre is come: but assone as she is deliuered of þe child she remembreth no more the anguish, for ioye that a man is borne into the worlde. John 16:22 And ye now are in sorow: but I wyll se you agayne, and youre hertes shall reioyce, and youre ioye shall no man take from you.
assureth their prayers made in his name to be acceptable to his Father.
John 16:23 And in that day shal ye axe me no question. Verely verely I say vnto you: whatsoeuer ye shall axe the father in my name, he wyll geue it you. John 16:24 Hytherto haue ye axed nothyng in my name. Axe and ye shall receyue it, that your ioye maye be full. John 16:25 These thynges haue I spoken vnto you in prouerbes. The tyme will come when I shall no more speake to you in prouerbes: but I shall shewe you plainly from my father. John 16:26 At that daye shall ye axe in my name. And I say not vnto you that I wyll speake vnto my father for you. John 16:27 For the father hym selfe loueth you, because ye haue loued me, and haue beleued, that I came out from God. John 16:28 I wente oute from the father, and came into the world, and I leaue the world agayne, and go to þe father. John 16:29 Hys disciples sayde vnto him: lo now speakest thou plainly, and thou vsest no prouerbe. John 16:30 Nowe knowe we that thou vnderstandest all thynges, and nedest not that any man should axe the any question. Therfore beleue we that thou camest from God. John 16:31 Iesus aunswered them: Now ye do beleue. John 16:32 Beholde, the houre draweth nye, and is all readye come that ye shalbe scatered euerye man hys wayes, and shall leaue me alone. And yet am I not alone. For the father is with me.
Peace in Christ, and in the world affliction.
John 16:33 These wordes haue I spoken vnto you, þt in me you myght haue peace. For in þe worlde shall you haue tribulacyon: but be of good cheare. I haue ouercome the worlde.
