Christ teacheth Nicodemus the necessity of regeneration.
John 3:1 Ther was a man of þe Pharises named Nicodemus a ruler amonge the Iewes. John 3:2 The same came to Iesus by nyghte & sayed vnto him: Rabbi, we knowe that thou art a teacher whiche art come from God. For no man coulde do such miracles as thou doest, except God were wt him. John 3:3 Iesus aunswered & said to him: verely verely, I said vnto the: except a man be borne a new, he can not se the kingdome of God. John 3:4 Nicodemus said vnto him: how can a man be borne when he is olde? can he enter into his mothers wombe and be borne againe? John 3:5 Iesus aunswered: verely, verely, I saye vnto the: except that a man be boren of water and of the spyryte, he can not enter into the kyngdome of God. John 3:6 That whyche is borne of the fleshe is fleshe: and that whiche is borne of the spyryte, is spyrite. John 3:7 Marueyle not that I said to þe, ye must be borne a newe. John 3:8 The wynde bloweth wher it listeth: and thou hearest the sounde therof: but canst not tell whence it cometh and whyther it goeth: So is euery man that is borne of the spyryte. John 3:9 And Nicodemus aunswered and said vnto him: how can these thinges be? John 3:10 Iesus aunswered & said vnto him: art thou a maister in Israel, and knowest not these thinges? John 3:11 Verely, verely, I say vnto þe we speake that we know and testify that we haue sene, & ye receiue not our witnes. John 3:12 Yf when I tel you earthly thinges ye beleue not: howe shoulde ye beleue if I shal tell you of heauenly thinges? John 3:13 And no man ascendeth vp to heauen, but he that came doune from heauen, that is to say, the sonne of man which is in heauen.
Of faith in his death.
John 3:14 And as Moyses lyfte vp the serpent in the wyldernes, euen so muste the sonne of man be lyft vp, John 3:15 that none that beleueth in him perish, but haue eternall life.
The great love of God towards the world.
John 3:16 For God so loueth the worlde, þt he hath geuen his only sonne, that none that beleue in him, should perishe: but should haue euerlastinge lyfe. John 3:17 For God sent not his sonne into þe world, to condempne the worlde: but that the world through him, might be saued.
Condemnation for unbelief.
John 3:18 He that beleueth on him, shal not be condempned. But he that beleueth not is condempned allready, because he beleueth not in the name of the onlye sonne of God. John 3:19 And this is the condempnacion, that light is come into the worlde, and the men loued darknes more then lyght, because their dedes were euyll. John 3:20 For euerye man that euyll doth, hateth the light: nether commeth to the lyghte: lest his dedes shoulde be reproued. John 3:21 But he that doeth truth commeth to the light that hys dedes myght be knowen, how that they are wrought in God.
John 3:22 After these thinges came Iesus & his dysciples into the Iewes lande, and ther he haunted wyth them & baptised.
The baptism, witness, and doctrine of John concerning Christ.
John 3:23 And Iohn also baptysed in Enon besides Salim, because ther was much water there, & they came and were baptised. John 3:24 For Iohn was not yet cast into pryson.
John 3:25 And ther arose a question betwene Iohns disciples and the Iewes aboute purifyinge. John 3:26 And they came vnto Iohn, and sayed vnto hym: Rabbie, he that was with þe beyond Iordan, to whom thou bareste witnes, Beholde the same baptyseth, and al men come to him. John 3:27 Iohn aunswered, and sayed: a man can receiue nothing at al except it be geuen him from heauen. John 3:28 Ye youre selues are witnesses how that I saide: I am not Christ, but am sent before him. John 3:29 He that hath the bryde is þe brydegrome. But the frend of the brydegrom, whiche standeth by and heareth him reioyseth greatlye of the brydegromes voyce. Thys my ioye is fulfilled. John 3:30 He muste increace: and I muste decreace. John 3:31 He that commeth from an hye is aboue al. He that is of the earth, is of the earth, & speaketh of the earth. He that commeth from heauen, is aboue all, John 3:32 and what he hath sene and hearde: that he testifyeth: but no man receiueth his testimony. John 3:33 Howbeit he that hath receiueth his testimony hath set to his seale that God is true. John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the wordes of God: For God geueth not þe spirite by measure. John 3:35 The father loueth þe sonne and hath geuen all thinges into his hand. John 3:36 He that beleueth on the sonne, hath euerlasting life, and he that beleueth not þe sonne shall not se life: but þe wrath of God abydeth on him.
