Luke 22

The Jews conspire against Christ.

Luke 22:1 The feast of swete bread drue nye whiche is called easter, Luke 22:2 and the hye pryestes and scribes sought how to kyl hym, but they feared the people.

Satan prepareth Judas to betray him.

Luke 22:3 Then entred Sathan into Iudas whose syr name was Iscaryot (whych was of the number of the twelue) Luke 22:4 and he went his waye and communed with the hygh Priestes and offycers how he myght betraye him to them. Luke 22:5 And they were glad, and promysed to geue him money. Luke 22:6 And he consented, and sought oportunitye to betray him vnto them when the people were awaye.

The Apostles prepare the Passover.

Luke 22:7 Then came the daye of swete bread when necessyte the easterlambe muste be offered. Luke 22:8 And he sent Peter and Ihon saiynge: go & prepare vs the easterlambe, that we may eate. Luke 22:9 They said to hym: Where wilt thou that we prepare? Luke 22:10 And he sayed vnto them: Behold when ye be entred into the citye, ther shall a man mete you bearinge a picher of water, him folowe into the same house that he entreth in, Luke 22:11 & saye vnto the good man of the house: The mayster sayeth vnto the: wher is the geste chamber, where I shall eate myne easterlambe with my disciples? Luke 22:12 And he shall shewe you a great parloure paued. There make redy. Luke 22:13 And they went and founde as he had sayde vnto them, and made redy the easterlambe. Luke 22:14 And when the houre was come, he sate doune and the twelue Apostles with him. Luke 22:15 And sayde vnto them: I haue inwardlye desyred to eate this easterlambe with you, before that I suffer. Luke 22:16 For I saye vnto you: henceforth I wyll not eate of it anye more, vntill it be fulfylled in the kingdome of God. Luke 22:17 And he toke the cuppe and gaue thankes, and sayde: Take this and deuide it amonge you. Luke 22:18 For I say vnto you: I wyll not drinke of the frute of the vyne vntyll the kyngdome of God be come.

Christ instituteth his holy supper:

Luke 22:19 And he toke bread, gaue thankes brake it, & gaue it to them, saiynge: This is my body which is geuen for you. This is the remembraunce of me. Luke 22:20 Lykewyse also, when they had supped he toke the cup saiynge: This cup is the newe testamente in my bloude, whiche shall for you be shed.

covertly foretelleth of the traitor:

Luke 22:21 Yet beholde, the hande of him that betrayeth me, is with me on on the table. Luke 22:22 And the sonne of man goeth as it is appointed. But wo be to that man by whome he is betrayed. Luke 22:23 And they beganne to enquire amonge them selues which of them it shoulde be, that shoulde do that.

dehorteth the rest of his Apostles from ambition:

Luke 22:24 And ther was a stryfe amonge them, which of them shoulde be taken for the greatest. Luke 22:25 And he sayde vnto them: the kinges of the gentyls raigne ouer them, and they that beare rule ouer them, are called gracious Lordes. Luke 22:26 But ye shall not be so. But he that is greatest amonge you, shalbe as the yongest: and he that is chiefe shal be as the minister. Luke 22:27 For whether is greater, he that sytteth at meate: or he that serueth? Is not he that sytteth at meate? And I am amonge you, as he that ministreth. Luke 22:28 Ye are they whiche haue bydden with me in my temptacions. Luke 22:29 And I appointe vnto you a kyngdome, as my father hath appointed to me, Luke 22:30 that ye maye eate and drinke at my table in my kingdome, and syt on seates, and iudge the twelue tribes of Israel.

assureth Peter his faith should not fail,

Luke 22:31 And the Lorde sayde: Simon Simon beholde, Sathan hath desyred you, to syfte you, as it were wheate, Luke 22:32 but I haue prayed for the, that thy faith fayle not. And when thou arte conuerted, strengthe thy brethren. Luke 22:33 And he said vnto him: Lorde I am redye to go with the into prison, and to death.

and yet he should deny him thrice.

Luke 22:34 And he saide: I tell the Peter, the cocke shal crowe this daye, tyl thou haue thrise denied that thou knowest me. Luke 22:35 And he sayde vnto them: when I sente you without wallet and scrip and shoes? lacked ye any thinge? And they saide no. Luke 22:36 And he sayde vnto them: but nowe he that hath a wallet let him take it vp and lykewyse his scrip. And he that hath no swerde, let him sell his cote and bye one. Luke 22:37 For I saye vnto you: that yet that which is written, must be perfourmed in me: euen with the wicked was he numbred. For tose thinges which are written of me, haue an ende. Luke 22:38 And they sayde: Lorde beholde here are two sweardes. And he sayde vnto them: it is ynough.

He prayeth in the mount, and sweateth blood:

Luke 22:39 And he came out, and went as he was wont to mounte Oliuete. And the disciples folowed hym. Luke 22:40 And when he came to the place, he sayde to them: praye, least ye fall into the temptacion. Luke 22:41 And he gate him selfe from them, about a stones cast, & kneled doune, & prayed Luke 22:42 saiynge: Father if thou wylt, wythdrawe this cup from me. Neuertheles, not my wyll, but thyne be fulfylled. Luke 22:43 And ther appered an aungell vnto him from heauen, confortinge him. Luke 22:44 And he was in agonye, and praied some what longer. And his sweate was lyke droppes of bloude trycklinge doune to the grounde. Luke 22:45 And he rose vp from prayer, and came to his disciples, and founde them slepinge for sorowe, Luke 22:46 and sayde vnto them: Why slepe ye? Ryse and praye, leste ye fall into temptacion.

Luke 22:47 Whyle he yet spake: beholde there came a company, and he that was called Iudas, one of the twelue, wente before them, and preased nyghe vnto Iesus to kysse him Luke 22:48 and Iesus said vnto hym: Iudas, betrayest thou the sonne of man with a kysse? Luke 22:49 When they whiche were aboute him sawe what woulde folowe, they sayed vnto him: Lorde, shall we smite with swearde?

he healeth Malchus' ear:

Luke 22:50 And one of them smote a seruaunte of the hiest prieste of all, & smote of his righte eare. Luke 22:51 And Iesus aunswered and saide: Suffer ye thus farre forth. And he touched his eare and healed him. Luke 22:52 Then Iesus sayed vnto the hye pryestes and rulers of þe temple, and the elders which were come to him. Be ye come out as vnto a thefe with sweardes and staues? Luke 22:53 When I was dayly with you in temple, ye stretched not forth handes agaynste me. But this is euen youre verye houre, and the power of darcknes.

Luke 22:57 Then he denyed hym saiynge: woman I knowe him not. Luke 22:58 And after a lytle while another sawe him and said: thou arte also of them. And Peter sayed: man I am not. Luke 22:59 And about the space of an houre after, another affyrmed saiynge: verelye euen this felowe was with him, for he is of Galile, Luke 22:60 and Peter sayed: man I wote not what thou sayest. And immediatlye whyle he yet spake, that cocke crewe. Luke 22:61 And the Lorde tourned backe and loked vpon Peter. And Peter remembred the wordes of the Lorde, howe he sayed vnto him, before the cocke crowe, thou shalt denye me thryse. Luke 22:62 And Peter wente out, and wepte betterlye.

Luke 22:63 And the men that stode about Iesus mocked hym and smote him, Luke 22:64 and blindfolded him, and smote his face. And axed him, saiynge arede who it is that smote the? Luke 22:65 And manye other thinges despitfully sayed they against him.
