Christ admonisheth the people to follow the good doctrine, not the evil examples of the scribes and Pharisees.
Matthew 23:1 Then spake Iesus to the people, & to hys disciples Matthew 23:2 sayinge: The Scribes and the Phariseis sit in Moyses seate. Matthew 23:3 All therfore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do, but after their workes do not, Matthew 23:4 for they say and do not. Yea, and they bynd heauy burthens and greuous to be borne and lay them on mens shoulders: but they them selfs will not heaue at them with one of theyr fyngers.
His disciples must beware of their ambition.
Matthew 23:5 All their workes thei do for to be sene of men. They set abroade theyr philateries, & make large borders on theyr garmentes, Matthew 23:6 and loue to sit vppermoste at feastes, and to haue the chiefe seates in the Synagoges, Matthew 23:7 and gretynges in the markettes, and too be called of men Rabbi. Matthew 23:8 But ye shall not suffer youre selues to be called Rabbi. For one is your master, that is to witte Christ, and all ye are brethreu. Matthew 23:9 And call no man your father vpon the earth, for there is but one your father, & he is in heauen. Matthew 23:10 Be not called masters: for there is but one your master: and he is Christ. Matthew 23:11 He that is greatest amonge you: shalbe your seruaunt. Matthew 23:12 But whosoeuer exalteth hym selfe: shalbe brought lowe, and he that humbleth hym selfe, shalbe exalted.
He denounceth eight woes against their hypocrisy and blindness:
Matthew 23:13 Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, for ye shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: ye youre selues go not in, neyther suffer ye them that come to enter in. Matthew 23:14 Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, ye deuoure wyddowes houses, & that vnder a coloure of praieng long prayers wherfore ye shall receyue great damnacion. Matthew 23:15 Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrites: which compasse sea and lande, to brynge one into youre belefe: and when he is brought ye make hym two folde more þe chyld of hell: then ye your selues are. Matthew 23:16 Wo be vnto you blynde guydes, whyche say whosoeuer sweare by the temple, it is nothing, but whosoeuer sweared by the golde of the temple: he offendeth. Matthew 23:17 Ye fooles and blind, whither is greater, the golde, or the temple þt sanctifieth the gold? Matthew 23:18 And whosoeuer sweareth by the aultare, it is nothynge: but whosoeuer sweareth by the offeryng that lyeth on þe aulter, offendeth. Matthew 23:19 Ye fooles and blynde, whither is greater the offerynge, or the aulter whiche sanctifieth the offeryng? Matthew 23:20 Whosoeuer therfore sweareth by the aultare, sweareth by it and by all that thereon is. Matthew 23:21 And whosoeuer sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by hym þt dwelleth therin. Matthew 23:22 And he that sweareth by heauen sweareth by the seate of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. Matthew 23:23 Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, which tythe mynte, anyse and commen, and leaue the wayghtyer matters of the lawe vndone: iudgement, mercy, and faythe. These ought ye to haue done, and not to haue lefte the other vndone. Matthew 23:24 Ye blynde guydes whiche strayne out a gnat, and swallowe a cammell. Matthew 23:25 Wo be to you Scribes and Pharises hypocrites, which make cleane the vtter side of þe cuppe, & of the platter: but within they are ful of bribery and excesse. Matthew 23:26 Thou blynd Pharisei, clense first the ynneside of the cup & platter, þt the outside of them may be clene also. Matthew 23:27 Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrytes, for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes, whiche appeare beautifull outwarde, but are within full of dead bones and of all filthines. Matthew 23:28 So are ye, for outwarde ye apeare righteouse vnto men, when within, ye are full of hypocresie and iniquitie. Matthew 23:29 Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrites, ye buylde the tombes of the Prophetes and garnysh the sepulchres of þe righteouse, Matthew 23:30 and saye: if we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we woulde not haue bene parteners with them in the bloude of the Prophetes. Matthew 23:31 So then ye be witnesses to your selues, þt ye are the chyldren of them whyche kylled the Prophetes. Matthew 23:32 Fulfil ye likewyse the measure of your fathers. Matthew 23:33 Ye serpentes and generacion of vppers howe shoulde ye scape the damnacion of hell?
and prophesieth of the destruction of Jerusalem.
Matthew 23:34 Wherfore, behold I send vnto you Prophetes, wise men, & Scribes. Of them ye shal kyl and crucifye: and of them ye shall scourge in your synagoges, and persecute from citye to citye Matthew 23:35 that vpon you may come all the ryghtuous bloude that was shede vpon the earth, from the bloude of ryghtuous Abel, vnto the bloude of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias, whom ye slewe betwene the tempel and the aulter. Matthew 23:36 Verely I say vnto you, al these things shall lyght vpon this generation. Matthew 23:37 Ierusalem, Ierusalem which killest prophetes, and stone them which are sent to the: howe often would I haue gathered thy children together: as the henne gathered her chikens vnder her winges, but ye would not. Matthew 23:38 Beholde your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate. Matthew 23:39 For I saye to you, ye shall not se me hence forth tyll that ye saye blessed is he that commeth in the name of the Lorde.
