David, in confidence of faith, and experience of God's favour, prayeth both for himself, and against the enemies of his soul.
Psalms 71:1 In the, O Lord, is my trust, let me neuer be put to confusyon, Psalms 71:2 but rydde me, and delyuer me thorow thy ryghtuousnesse: enclyne thyne eare vnto me, and helpe me. Psalms 71:3 Be thou my strong hold (wher vnto I may all waye fle) thou that hast promised to helpe me: for thou art my house of defence and my castell. Psalms 71:4 Deliuer me, O my God, out of the hand of the vngodly, oute of the hande of the vnryghtuous and cruell man. Psalms 71:5 For thou, O Lord God, art the thing that I long for, þu art my hope euen fro my youth. Psalms 71:6 I haue leaned vpon the euer sence I was borne, thou art he that toke me out of my mothers wombe therfore is my prayse all waye of the. Psalms 71:7 I am become a wonder vnto the multytude, but my sure trust is in the. Psalms 71:8 Oh let my mouth be filled with thy praise and honour all the day long. Psalms 71:9 Cast me not away in myne old age forsake me not when my strength fayleth me. Psalms 71:10 For myne enemyes speake agaynst me & they that laye wayte for my soule, take their councell together, Psalms 71:11 sayinge: God hath forsaken hym, persecute hym, take hym, for there is none to helpe hym. Psalms 71:12 Go not farre fro me, O God: my God, haste the to helpe me. Psalms 71:13 Let them be confounded and perysh, that are agaynste my soule: let theym be couered with shame and dishonoure, that seke too do me euell.
He promiseth constancy.
Psalms 71:14 As for me, I wil paciently abyde alwaye, and will euer encrease thy prayse. Psalms 71:15 My mouth shall speake of thy righteousnesse and sauyng health all the day longe, for I knowe no ende therof. Psalms 71:16 Let me go in (O Lorde God) and I wyll make mencion of thy power and righteousnesse onely.
He prayeth for perserverance.
Psalms 71:17 Thou, O God, haste learned me fro my youth vp vntyll now, therfore wyll I tell of thy wonderous workes. Psalms 71:18 Forsake me not, O GOD, in myne olde age, when I am gray headed: vntyll I haue shewed thyne arme vnto chylders chyldren, and thy power to all them that are yet for to come.
He praiseth God, and promiseth to do it cheerfully.
Psalms 71:19 Thy righteousnes, O God, is very hye, thou that doest great thinges: O God, who is lyke vnto the? Psalms 71:20 O what great troubles and aduersityes hast thou shewed me? and yet dyddest thou turne and refreshe me: yea, & broughtest me from the depe of the earth agayn. Psalms 71:21 Thou hast brought me to great honoure, and comforted me on euery syde. Psalms 71:22 Therfore wil I prayse the and thy faythfulnesse, O God, playing vpon þe lute, vnto the will I singe vpon the harpe, O thou holy one of Israell. Psalms 71:23 My lippes wolde fayne singe prayses vnto the: and so wolde my soule, whom thou hast deliuered. Psalms 71:24 My tongue talketh of thy righteousnesse all the daye longe, for they are confounded and brought vnto shame, that soughte to do me euell.
